Enrollees in the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) are covered for approved medical expenses incurred while abroad through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core Program. The University of California also offers the UC Travel Insurance for travelers on official University business.
If you are officially withdrawing from school to travel, your health insurance will terminate unless you opt into the Continuation Plan or the Voluntary UC SHIP. Please visit End of Coverage: Insurance Options to learn more about insurance options while traveling abroad.
International Claims
Most foreign clinics and providers will not bill your insurance directly and will require you to pay your bill at the time care is delivered. To get reimbursed, you will need to obtain the following and submit to BlueCard Worldwide Service Center, P.O. Box 72017, Richmond, VA 23255-2017.
- International Claim Form
- Medical report translated in English
- Itemized bill and proof of payment (receipts)
Please note: It is often impossible to obtain foreign medical records once you have departed the area, so be sure to obtain this paperwork before you return home.
