Out-of-Area Care

You have several options for seeking care if you are outside the Bay Area and have an acute issue arise. Please see options for medical and mental health needs below.

Medical Concerns

Primary Care Provider Clinic (if open):

  • Contact your primary care provider office within business hours. They may offer you RN triage, a telehealth visit, or refer you to an urgent care or emergency room as medically indicated.
  • UCSF Health Primary Care has on-call services during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Any UC Campus Student Health

All UC campuses offer reciprocity care to students enrolled and visiting from any other UC campus.

Contact information for the other nine UC campuses
  • Any UC Student Health Center will see a student visiting from another UC campus for the same fees they charge their own non-SHIP enrolled students.
  • Services are considered in-network for UC SHIP enrolled students.

Network Urgent Care Provider:

Follow these steps to find care in your plan:

Step 1: Go to anthem.com/ca/find-care.

Step 2: Search as a member or guest.

For members — Select Log in for Personalized Search on the left. To help you find care providers who would be a good fit for you, we sort your search results and provide the top three matches using Personalized Match. There are more options available below your top three, and you can always re-sort these search results by distance or name.

For guests — If you are not enrolled yet in an Anthem plan, you also can search as a guest. Choose Basic search as a guest. Then answer the questions regarding the type of care you need, the state you need care in, and the type of plan you want to search under.

  • Select the type of plan or network — medical.
  • Choose the state where the plan or network is located.
  • Select Medical (Student Health) for how you get your insurance.
  • Choose a plan or network — in this case, UCSHIP PPO.
  • Select the Continue button.

Step 3: Enter your city, county, or ZIP code. You also can search by doctor, or procedure, as well as using other care-related terms.

Step 4: View your search results. You can filter your results by selecting the relevant boxes on the left or browsing by list or map views.

  • UC SHIP enrollees will have a $25 copay.

Mental Health Concerns

If you experience a mental health emergency – proceed to the closest emergency room. For non-emergent needs:

If SMHW is open:

  • Student Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHW) encourages students with an urgent mental health concern to connect with us as soon as possible.
  • If you are not in the Bay Area, staff will advise you on how to access care.

If SMHW is closed

  • If you feel your situation is life-threatening (thoughts of harming yourself or others, for example) go to the closest emergency room.
  • You can also get support anytime from the 24/7 Mental Health Consult Line. Call SMHW (415-476-1281) and choose option 2. You will be connected to a service staffed by non-SMHW counselors who can assist you.
